Do not use general keywords or phrases. You want to try and find people that are ready to buy and are passed the research phase. For example someone looking for "laptops" is probably still researching which laptop is the best, where as someone searching for "Apple MacBook Pro 2.21 GHz" is probably ready to buy one.

Once you do some research and find a niche and keywords that look like they get an ample amount of traffic, and the audience actively buys products you're good to start catering to that niche.
